Role Overview
Riggers play a crucial role in industrial, construction, and offshore projects where heavy equipment and materials must be lifted, moved, and positioned safely. A Rigger Level II or Level III is a trained professional responsible for preparing lifting equipment, securing loads, and coordinating with crane operators during lifting operations. In offshore environments, where space is limited and safety standards are extremely strict, the work of a qualified rigger becomes even more important.
Offshore projects involve complex operations that require precise lifting procedures and strong coordination among workers. Riggers ensure that lifting equipment such as slings, shackles, and hooks are properly selected and used according to the load weight and lifting plan. Their work helps prevent accidents, protects expensive equipment, and ensures that project activities continue smoothly and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
The main responsibility of a rigger is to prepare and execute safe lifting operations. Before lifting begins, the rigger inspects rigging equipment to ensure it is in proper condition and suitable for the specific task. They attach lifting gear to the load, confirm that connections are secure, and verify that all lifting equipment meets safety standards.
During lifting operations, riggers communicate with crane operators using standard signals or radio communication. They guide the movement of heavy loads and ensure that materials are placed accurately in the required location. In offshore projects, riggers must also remain alert to environmental factors such as wind, movement of platforms, and limited working space. They are also responsible for reporting damaged equipment, maintaining proper documentation, and following strict safety procedures.
Skills and Professional Knowledge
Candidates applying for Rigger Level II or Level III positions must have strong knowledge of rigging equipment, lifting procedures, and industrial safety regulations. Experience working with cranes and lifting gear is essential, especially in offshore environments where lifting operations can be more complex and hazardous.
Certification is a critical requirement for this role. Workers must hold valid rigging certifications such as IRATA approval and other relevant training related to rope access or rigging operations. Knowledge of safety courses such as BOSIET and H2S training is often required for offshore projects. Riggers should also have good communication skills and the ability to work closely with crane operators, supervisors, and safety teams.
