Role Description
A Safety Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe working environment in industrial and construction projects. In large facilities such as petrochemical plants and shutdown maintenance projects, safety officers play a crucial role in identifying hazards, implementing safety procedures, and ensuring that workers follow proper safety guidelines. Their primary objective is to prevent accidents, protect employees, and maintain compliance with company and industry safety standards.
In projects related to major industrial companies, safety officers are expected to monitor all work activities closely and ensure that every task is performed according to approved safety regulations. Their presence on site helps reduce risks, improve safety awareness, and maintain operational efficiency. Experienced safety officers are especially important during shutdown projects where multiple tasks are performed simultaneously within a limited time.
Key Responsibilities
The main responsibility of a safety officer is to inspect the worksite regularly and ensure that all workers follow established safety procedures. This includes checking that employees use proper personal protective equipment, verifying that work permits are properly issued, and identifying potential hazards before they lead to accidents. Safety officers also conduct safety briefings and toolbox meetings to educate workers about workplace risks and safe working practices.
In addition, safety officers investigate incidents or near-miss events and prepare reports that help management improve safety procedures. They also coordinate with supervisors and project managers to ensure that safety policies are implemented effectively. Monitoring site activities, maintaining safety documentation, and promoting a strong safety culture are important aspects of this role.
Skills and Professional Knowledge
Candidates applying for the safety officer position should have a strong understanding of occupational health and safety regulations. Professional safety certification such as NEBOSH is often required for working in large industrial projects. This certification demonstrates knowledge of hazard management, risk assessment, and workplace safety practices.
Experience in petrochemical plants or shutdown projects, particularly within companies associated with SABIC operations, is highly valuable. Candidates should also possess strong communication skills because safety officers interact with workers, supervisors, and management to enforce safety policies. Attention to detail, leadership ability, and a proactive approach to identifying risks are important qualities for ensuring workplace safety.
