Position Description
The Safety Officer plays a vital role in maintaining workplace safety and ensuring that all industrial operations follow strict health and safety regulations. In large industrial environments such as construction sites, oil and gas facilities, and petrochemical plants, safety officers are responsible for monitoring daily activities to prevent accidents, injuries, and hazardous incidents. Their primary objective is to create a safe working environment for all employees and contractors.
In Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing industrial sector, especially in cities like Jubail, safety professionals are in high demand. Companies rely on trained safety officers to implement safety procedures, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with international safety standards. This role is essential for reducing workplace risks and protecting both workers and company assets.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
A Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing workplace safety and ensuring that all employees follow proper safety guidelines. One of their main responsibilities is conducting routine inspections of the worksite to identify potential hazards and unsafe conditions. If any risks are found, the safety officer must take immediate action to correct the issue and prevent accidents.
Another important responsibility is supervising workers during operations and ensuring that they use the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, safety shoes, and protective clothing. Safety officers also provide safety training sessions and toolbox talks to educate workers about potential hazards and proper safety procedures.
They are also responsible for maintaining safety documentation, preparing incident reports, and coordinating with supervisors and management to improve workplace safety standards. By actively monitoring the work environment, Safety Officers help maintain a safe and productive workplace.
Professional Skills and Qualification Requirements
To work as a Safety Officer, candidates must possess strong knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations. A NEBOSH certification is commonly required because it provides internationally recognized training in workplace safety management.
Candidates should have good observation skills to quickly identify potential risks in the workplace. Strong communication skills are also important because safety officers must clearly explain safety procedures and instructions to workers from different backgrounds.
Experience in industrial or construction environments is often preferred, especially in large projects such as shutdown maintenance, petrochemical plants, or heavy construction sites. Candidates should also be familiar with safety documentation, risk assessments, and emergency response procedures.
